Skateboarding Marathon Record

An update here on the man who wanted to "Skate Australia" - apparently he has finished ...

A British man today broke the record for the longest journey made on a skateboard after completing a charity trek across Australia.

Dave Cornthwaite, of Swansea, south Wales, finished the final section of his 5,820km (3,638 mile) journey in Brisbane at around 2.30am GMT (12.30pm local time).

The 27-year-old graphic designer began his epic trip on his battered skateboard Elsa in Perth, Western Australia, on August 30.

He has since passed through Adelaide, along the Great Ocean Road, Melbourne, Victoria, and Sydney in New South Wales, notching up an average of 60km a day.

Article continues
Mr Cornthwaite's antipodean odyssey, which has raised more than £16,000 for three children's charities, smashed the previous record for a skateboard journey, set by an American who skated 4,830km in 2003.

He arrived in Brisbane yesterday, stopping 3km (2 miles) from the finishing line before completing the final stretch in the city's South Bank area today.

Skateboarding Twins Take Off

Tristan and Nic Puehse are fraternal twins who were born on December 8, 1997 and began skating just after their 6th birthday. Their natural athletic ability and toughness, combined with a "no-fear" attitude have made them serious competitors.

They began skating in CASL's (California Amateur Skateboard League) 8 and Under division in May 2004. In their very first CASL competition, Tristan took 1st and Best Trick while Nic placed 2nd. In August 2004, they were moved up to the 10 and under Sponsored division while still just six years old!

In July 2004, after 2 months of competitive skating, Nic won gold and Tristan silver at the California State Games in San Diego.

Skateboarders Fundraise to Build Skatepark

The Cave City Skate Club is applying for grants and planning several fund-raisers to raise money to build a skateboard park within the Cave City Park, now that city officials have designated an area for the facility, spokesman Matthew Hubbard said.

The group is also getting donations from banks and other area businesses, he said.

Others who have represented the group during Cave City Council sessions include Anthony Compton and Susan Tully.

“Our first fund-raiser will be a concert,” Hubbard said. Hopefully, the concert will feature bands from a wide area and which are known to support skateboarders’ efforts, he said.

The group hopes to hold the concert in the city park, but nothing has been scheduled as yet because everything is in the planning stage, Hubbard said.

The group hopes to build a $175,000 skate facility that would also be used by inline skaters and freestyle bicyclists.

Skating Allowed on Sidewalks

Interesting this - in the Skate vs NoSkate wars the skateboarders have actually been ALLOWED to skate on the sidewalk ...
---- 8< ---- cut here ---- 8< ----
Skaters in Grottoes will not have to leave the town limits to use their boards legally any longer.

Monday night, Town Council passed a revision of the town code allowing skateboards on sidewalks.

The revision passed with a vote of 4-2. Council members Jim Justis and Charlie Lawhorne voted against the change.

Councilman Ed Sterling said the revised amendment would allow the general use of skateboards on town sidewalks, but prohibited their use "as a way to impede or obstruct pedestrians."

After the amendment was passed, Mayor Doug Shifflett told the kids in attendance that disrespectful use of the boards would not be tolerated.

"I have no problems with skateboards," he said. "I just hope that the kids that use them will be more respectful of the people around them."

The old town code — which passed in May — prohibited using "skates, skateboards and toys dangerously" on town sidewalks, according to a copy of the law.

After town residents spoke against the ordinance, the code was changed to allow the use skateboards, bikes and scooters.

Shifflett — whose term as mayor ends next month — had opposed the use of skateboards on sidewalks. Previously, he said, "skateboarders don’t know how to be polite to pedestrians."

Madison Skatepark Fund

Since skateboarding’s initial rise in popularity during the 1970’s, skateboarding and in-
line skating have established themselves as national sports.

In fact, skateboarding has become so popular in America that the number of skateboarders in the U.S. (11.6 million) actually surpassed the number of baseball players (10.9 million) in
2000!

Yet, while our local landscape is speckled with baseball fields, you won’t find a single skatepark.

Skaters Face £500 fines in Harlow

Back on the Skate vs NoSkate front - it appears that Harlow council are taking a tough line - but £500??? Most dangerous drivers dont get fined that much, shoplifters get less, and other anti-social behaviour results in nothing more than a warning - but get caught skateboarding and you really *are* as threat to society.
---- 8< ---- cut here ---- 8< ----
FINES of up to £500 could soon be imposed on anyone caught skateboarding in Harlow's town centre, shopping areas, garages or hatches.

The council has applied to create a byelaw to prevent people skating in the areas.

Community safety manager Paul Anderson believes the legislation could be in place as early as next spring.
He said: "At present we're still in the early stages but we're going down the legal route to create this by-law. Whether people are landed with these fines will depend to a large extend how strictly we police the law when it comes into force."

He warned skaters: "You can put anyone behind bars if they fail to pay a fine."

Skateboarding has been cited by authorities as a nuisance around the town causing damage, disruption and posing risks to health and safety.

Worlds Largest Skateboard Ramp

Approximately 360 feet long, the ramp is 75 feet high at its apex. That is where riders begin their run, speeding down a 180-foot-long roll-in to a ramp that launches them across a 70-foot gap with trapeze netting below. Landing on a 27-foot sloped section, they then boost up to 50 feet above the ground from a 30-foot quarterpipe. A shorter route begins with a 55-foot-tall platform leading to a 50-foot gap, and the 30-foot quarterpipe.

The words "oh wow!" spring to mind - then I watched the video and went "oh wow!"

Are large ramps like these taking Skateboarding to the next level? Or are they ruining the sport by too much emphasis on "big air" and unfeasibly large jumps?

Mt. Pleasant Skateboarding Ban

The pleas of nearly 20 skateboarders on Monday did not stop Mt. Pleasant council members from banning the activity on all borough property.

The vote to present an ordinance for review by the borough solicitor was unanimous, aside from absent council members Chris Rega and Cory Snyder.

In September, council considered a total ban because of the damage to borough and private property, as well as safety reasons after children were seen riding down Washington Street on their bellies.

Skateboarding Part of Gym Class?

---- 8< ---- cut here ---- 8< ----
The students at Douglass Elementary School already had a climbing wall and a zip line in their gymnasium. Then their P.E. teacher learned to skateboard.

Physical education teacher Richard Cendali watches technique and foot placement as his students skateboard in the gym at Douglass Elementary School in Boulder, Colo. "Mr. C" learned to skateboard from a former student.

So the students are taking up skateboarding, too. It's the latest in a trend toward physical education that's fun and tempts children into staying active outside of school and perhaps years later.

Douglass teacher Richard Cendali developed a school skateboarding curriculum after learning how to skateboard last year from his former student Eric Klassen. Klassen is the co-owner of the skateboard education program Skate Pass LLC.

"I'm always trying to find new and exciting things kids like to do," said the white-haired Cendali, 60.

Skateboarding is Not a Crime

Skaters in Lebanon, Pennsylvania celebrated Go Skateboarding Day ... on June 21st, 2006 with a rail session at Underground Skateboard Company on Cumberland Street in historic downtown Lebanon. Afterwards, inspired by Philadelphia’s huge Wild in the Streets demonstrations in previous years, the group of skaters took to the streets en masse to raise awareness for Go Skateboarding Day. They made it about 8 blocks down US-422 West before being reminded that, sometimes, skateboarding is in fact still a crime.

Record "bomb drop" in Las Vegas

The world highest "bomb drop" has just happened from a 28 feet high neon sign in Las Vegas

''That was the scariest ... thing I've ever done in my life,'' said Danny Way, who is best known for his 61-foot (18-meter) leap across the Great Wall of China last summer. ''I'm lucky I'm alive.'' The previous record for the skateboarding stunt, in which skaters free fall onto a ramp and land on a board, was held by Adil Dyani of Norway, who dropped 12 feet and 3.6 inches (3.7 meters) onto an 18-foot ramp in 2004, according to the Guinness Book of World records.

Lunar Olympics

If the winter Olympic Games were held on the moon, where would they be? The lunar Alps, of course.

This article from NASA is an excellent discussion about a possible "Lunar Winter Olympics".

The moon's dust-covered slopes are good places to ski. There's plenty of powder, moguls and, best of all, low-gravity. With only 1/6th g holding them down, skiers and snowboarders can do tricks they only dreamed of doing on Earth. How about an octuple-twisting quadruple backflip? Don't worry. Crashes happen in slow-motion, so it won't hurt so much to wipe out.

Sure it sounds like science fiction- but when I was a child the idea that everyone would own one or more high powered computers linked into a global information network - that was science fiction too.

The recent announcement by Space Adventures- a company that have already placed 3 space tourists in space at an estimated cost of $20 million a head - that it planned to build a $265 million spaceport in the near the southern end of the Persian Gulf, will help to develop space tourism to the point where the thinkable becomes reality.

Right now companies who are exploring the idea of space travel for commercial purposes are thinking in terms of suborbital hops and short-term spacestation visits for the well heeled.

But once the business generates cash - the money will lure the big boys to the moon - the prospect of luring well heeled newly weds to the moon - "Have your honeymoon - on the Moon" - will be irresistable.

Once it becomes established enough and safe enough - the possibilities of lunar sports are endless.

The prospect of a 40+ metre long jump, a 20+ metre high jump and a pole vault of 30+ metres will enticing enough for athletes to want to compete - even if the facilities of the "Olympic Camp" will probable be cramped and rudimentary. Skateboarders can build ramps higher than their their eye can see - and just how high can a ski-jumpers' ramp get?

One bad thing - although track, field and board sports will be great in the Lunar Olympics - there wont be any freefall and skyflying events - there's no atmosphere, nor will there be any surfing - there's no waves, although you could import or make enough water to have a lunar olympic sized swimming pool - who's for the 30+ metre high dive?

Best idea anyone can get comes from Jack Skis the Moon - an account of astronauts' experiences on the moon.

It could almost read like a brochure:

Now this is a ski report: Clear skies, no wind, sweet slopes and deep powder--not expected to melt for at least five billion years. Grab your poles and pack your bags.

Just don't forget your spacesuit, because you're going to the moon.

The similarity between mountains on Earth and on the Moon were enough that Ed Mitchell of Apollo 14 wise-cracked "my snowsuit's ready", and Apollo 15's Jim Irwin commented that if felt like "soft powder snow" underfoot.

My favourite was the story of lunar astronaut and geologist, Harrison "Jack" Schmitt, from Apollo 17 - his description of "lunar skiing" will have to wait for a while before it it is bettered.

"In the moon's low gravity," he explains 35 years later, "you can ski above the moondust--and I did. Imagine swinging your arms and legs cross-country style. With each push of your toe, your body glides forward above ground. Swing, glide, swing, glide. The only marks you leave in the moondust are the toe-pushes."

Indoor Skateparks

The Sublimited site has an article What Does it Take to Run an Indoor Skatepark isting some of the pros and cons of owning an indoor skatepark.

If bikers can run clubhouses, and various groups can run other private clubs - what is to stop a large group of skaters collectively running an indoor skatepark?

That way the financial load is shared - and the mundance tasks such as running the place and cleaning are also shared.

There are other possibilities to for generating income over and above the skating - not just skating demos and other events - but cross over events that get more people through the door.

- Mini-Market day - invite local skate shops to rent a pitch at the edge of your space, add sound system and skaters and away you go

- Graffiti day - get all the local writers and crews in for a head to head - invite skaters , add sound system ....

- Band Day - obvious really - just add skaters and people ...

- The "Art Gallery Opening" - just an excuse to fill the space full of any art from local artists and party ....

- The "Party Crew" hookup - - there must be at least one party crew who would die to rent your space for a night .. or even for a day - there are plenty of hard core party crews who like to afterparty and chill out in a different location

and so on - the only limits to what you could do with a large indoor skatepark is your imagination, the attitude of your neighbours and whether your local police are really uptight.

Question Authority

This new anthology of tales by skaters "No Comply: Skateboarding speaks on Authority" looks interesting:

Due to conflicts with police, property owners, security and everyday civilians, skateboarders inevitably develop a unique perception of authority..."

I'd love to be sent a review copy of this (big hint guys), so that I can write it up properly and do it justice, as it's unlikely to appear in any of the skate shops near where I live in Spain.

Talking of which, Skateboarding is BIG here in Spain - I live in a small town and we have two skate-parks with plans for a third - I think the town hall are aware of their social responsibilities and ensure that skaters have somewhere to go.

I can't imagine the police are any better here if you are skating illegaly though - the local police might be cool but I wouldn't want to get any grief from the Guardia Civil - those guys look hardcore.

"The founding fathers would be saddened to see that in 2005 the current interpretation of their basic societal framework included the green-lighting of acts such as the bum-rushing of a 13-year-old skating alone in a public park..."
